Today, bamboo building is becoming more and more common. Many people from several countries across the world are buying into the fact that bamboo is perhaps one of the most suitable natural resources for green building materials. With the state of the Earth’s forests, many types of hardwood are coming dangerously close to extinction, which has already started to have an impact on the environment. This is why many people have chosen to use products made from bamboo, a fast growing, and renewable member of the grass family that is now used for everything from fencing to clothing.

Bamboo is a good resource for building materials, mainly because it is one of the oldest construction materials that has proven itself over the years. In fact, many Asian, Central American and South American countries still use bamboo for many of their building and construction needs. It has certainly been able to withstand environmental conditions and other durability tests. It is now being used for scaffolding for tall buildings, making bamboo roofs, foot bridges and even houses. As such, construction in certain parts of the world is much cheaper than in the western world.

Several Western countries have followed suit and have started to use bamboo as part of their building material supply because of how quickly it grows as well as how sturdy and reliable it has proven to be. In particular, many countries have embraced using bamboo for scaffolding. Once it is stacked and laid out the right way, bamboo produces the same kind of sturdiness as man made materials used for scaffolding. The only consideration for Western countries is that bamboo is mainly grown in Asia, so getting it shipped could prove to be costly.

What people in construction like about bamboo is that it can be worked or manipulated with simple tools. No advanced or fancy equipment is needed to get bamboo to do what you want it to do. One great feature is that it can be bent to shape when heated, then keeps the shape after it cools. This gives bamboo the edge over other building materials in terms of adaptability and flexibility in more ways than one!

There are several reasons why bamboo is a good resource for building materials, and perhaps the most significant is that from an environmental standpoint, it does less harm than other natural resources or man made materials. If you are at a point where you can consider using bamboo as opposed to hardwood for building materials, don’t hesitate. You’ll be happy with the results, and so will the environment!

Have you been considering building with bamboo? If you are interested in a wood-like material to enhance the décor of your home or outdoor space, bamboo is definitely the material to work with. This raw material is usually available in bamboo poles that you can tailor to suit your needs. But just what should you consider when gearing up to buy bamboo poles? Take a look at some important pointers below:

– There are two main types of bamboo; solid bamboo is thick-walled, curved and has dominant nodes. The plus of solid bamboo is that it is not prone to splitting. It is used in the Far East for various types of construction. Hollow bamboo is the more common type, straight with nodes not as prominent. The downside of hollow bamboo is that it is prone to splitting when there is no moisture.

– Unless you live in an area where bamboo is grown, you will definitely have to consider shipping costs. Because bamboo is sold as poles, packaging would need to be customized, hence pushing up the price of shipping. Consider saving some extra cash just for shipping your bamboo poles or try to find the nearest place that sells the resource.

– Depending on what you plan to use the bamboo for, you might need to get it cut. However, it is also expensive to get bamboo cut the right way. Sure, anybody can say they know how to cut bamboo, but if you want the job done right, you will probably have to pay a lot of money.

– If you buy the bamboo green, it will eventually change color and dry out over time. You should definitely consider this fact when buying bamboo poles. It would be a good idea to by the yellow types of bamboo that will not be at risk of drying out over time.

– If you want to be able to bend your bamboo pole, you have to buy it green, because that’s the only time it will actually bend!

While bamboo is attractive, durable and cost effective, it may take a lot of work – especially on your pocket – to actually get the raw material to your doorstep. You will definitely see the long term results once you actually manage to get it there, but just make up your mind to spend some time and financial resources in choosing and sourcing your bamboo poles.
